rebecca minkoff pre-fall 13

I'm currently sitting in the hallway of an office building in the CBD, 24 floors up, mooching off some dude's unprotected wifi (cheers bro) and drinking the best damn coffee I've had in weeks (or, uh, the only damn coffee I've had in weeks - I've missed this stuff) as the film I'm currently working on powers through this fine sunday afternoon. With some time to kill before the next costume change (this job - most film jobs, really - is packed full of lots of glamorous waiting around) I just had to share my love for this collection.

Rebecca Minkoff was absolutely my favourite to come out of pre-fall 13. Oh boy. So good. The carefully distressed leather and denim, perfect autumn shades, layers building those strong and feminine silhouettes. And to top it off, inspiration was primarily drawn from Amelia Earhart - so cool.

I would wear any of these pieces in a heartbeat. And pack the rest of them into a suitcase, find a plane and fly around the world, having the best-dressed adventures a lady could have. (But um, hopefully without disappearing in the process.)

What was your favourite pre-fall collection?

the kid's in america

SO. Wildfox took on Clueless for its Spring '13 collection, and the lookbook is AMAZING:

Man, I freakin' love it when designers and creatives draw inspiration from cult teen movies. For real one of my favourite things. And Wildfox have basically recreated a good chunk of Cluless through still images. And the casting, the composition, the locations, the colours. Nailed it. That last photo in the car just gets me, pretty sure it's going to be my desktop background for the next few months. Check out the whole thing, srs.

national anthem

I like Lana Del Rey a lot but I'm no diehard fan of her music - I find her songs generally pretty hit or miss. But this - this for me is LDR at her best. I love the way she absolutely kills those retro vibes, while coating them in a thick layer of sadness and nostalgia. Gurl knows what she's doing. And how to look damn good while doing it, of course.

american graffiti

I tweeted the other week that my initial reaction to watching American Graffiti was anger. It is a right damn shame that I hadn't seen it sooner. IT IS SO GOOD, YOU GUYS. If I'm preaching to the already converted here, I don't care, I'MMA PREACH AWAY.

Get ready for some no-enthusiasm-held-back "reviewing":

THE MUSIC. I don't know what else to say except that it is an example of a perfect movie soundtrack. I actually fell in love with the film before I'd even seen it because someone recommended the soundtrack and it. Is. Perfect. It is perfect. See examples below and then I dare you to not go buy/ download the whole damn thing. THE CARS. This movie is a visual explosion of hot rod goodness. I can't imagine what it must have been like to drive around the streets and be surrounded by so much style. I'm guessing it would have been amazing. THE HAIR. Give people these days more hairspray and pomade, I say! Let's all wreck our hair for the sake of volume, bounce and slickness! THE CLOTHES. THE SLANG. "I said, 'go kiss a duck, marblehead!'" "If brains were dynamite, you couldn't blow your nose." Oh, kids those days.

And you know what I especially liked? It didn't try to glamourise these kids and their lives. Amongst their fine style you can see their pimples, the way their hair's knotting from so much hairspray, the creases in their clothes, and the awkwardness! So much pure adolescent awkwardness. Like how Freaks and Geeks got early 80s high school spot on (supposedly - I wasn't there), American Graffiti gets early 60s small town teenagers what I imagine to be spot fucking on.

So. Who's going to join me in giving up modern technology for a wee while so we can instead spend the nights cruising the streets in our fab rides?

rolling in the deep

Thing I am more than ready for: winter. Or at the very least - a day that isn't a minimum of 30 degrees? Please?

Anyway, some cold weather goodness here with the style of Hanne Gaby Odiele and, uh, a bunch of dudes' feet. Nice feet, but.

I'm not entirely sure what these are called. Finger bands? Mini rings? But it doesn't matter because they are genius cool and I'm crazy about them and I am definitely going to attempt to DIY some myself at some point.

true directions

Inspiration time. I spent my yesterday watching But I'm a Cheerleader and it was overloaded with style. Hella entertaining but what got me were the barbie dreamhouse vibes, the oversaturated colours, the sweaters and full skirts, the librarian glasses, the old school barrettes and the intense pink and blue palette. Visual feast.

Give it a watch here.

Go

I was going to post some photos of my head in a beret with a big bow on it tonight, but I'm feeling so damn inspired I want to share some of that with you instead. Lovely! Right?

It's those matching Miu Mius. Love it. (Alix and Louise.)

Laura Marling and Jonsi have filled the silence of my evening and have made it perfect.

Tavi, on how music affects her (specifically Courtney Love's band Hole):

"I just need to know it’s there, and that coiled up inside are my thoughts and feelings and truths, like a reel of fortune cookie slips. It’s nice to have these in another place, and to know these are shared and probably not uncommon. Hearing them can be like when you’ve been sitting in silence and then are startled at the sound of your own voice, but in this case its someone else’s voice, and they’ve articulated what you wanted to voice perfectly, at times without having to be very articulate at all. To confront this voice is to feel free, for at least 38 minutes and 23 seconds. For at least 38 minutes and 23 seconds, these thoughts and feelings and truths don’t make my mind feel like a living room littered with scabs, and I can use them for empowerment."

"People want to be liked. We all crave attention and affection and we all reject shame. We want to feel needed, and exceptional and we hate feeling insignificant. We drink so we can be ourselves and not mind it so much. We’re desperate to be understood. We want to know someone else has felt it, too. We don’t know exactly how to pleasure each other. We just want love. In any and every form."

- John Mayer

Jane makes the most beautiful pillow fort ever.

"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."

Stop

I had so many plans today! I was going to go to the park and take photos of myself doing handstands and then ride my bike to the beach and then make cupcakes! But oh no! My stomach decided that it didn't really like me all that much so I spent the day in bed. Blah. I'm feeling better but don't have the photos I was hoping to share with you. So! Here are some pretty street style photos for all you pretty people out there...

I speak because I can

I've had the busiest weekend in forever (work/ studying/ drunken shenanigans with friends/ football/ dance competition - where did this whole me having a life thing come from??) plus non-stop uni today (where I got to play director in my TV studio class! Sitting in the control room! Telling people what to do! Pressing lots of buttons!) equals me very happy to be sitting back, listening to Laura Marling and looking at pretty pictures. Here's a few of them.. (Also well done if you were able to make sense of that paragraph - my brain's a wee bit fizzled at the moment.)
