summer's end

Hey, here's a word: welp. ~Life~ got away from me a little bit this past month. Between working as much as I could and trying (and failing) to not become overwhelmed about the Big Life Shit I've got planned in a few months, I didn't leave much energy for my internet happy place. But that can happen. I think I've got myself somewhat together now, so let's have another crack at consistency, shall we?

Summer is finito, folks! Well, to an extent - I'm in Perth, so. The heat ain't leaving just yet. But there just isn't the same romance to 'long, beach-filled Autumn days' or 'mild Autumn nights under the stars', y'know? For another year, our favourite summer activities just won't be the same - chilling at the beach, late night swims, road trips, refreshing gin and tonics, frozen yoghurt, wearing bathers in public places, all that nonsense. So I've put together a bit of a So Long, Summer playlist for you. (Or if you're northern hemispherically inclined, a See You in a Few Months, Summer! playlist.)

1. Wait for the Summer by Yeasayer

2. My Heart is on Fire by Asta

3. Summertime by Sam Cooke

4. The Real Thing by Russell Morris

5. Shelter Song by Temples

7. Step Up For the Cool Cats by Palma Violets

8. Ghost Train by Summer Camp

What will you miss about Summer/ what are you looking forward to about Summer? (If anything?)

reckless

Ahoy hoy! Exciting thing! I offer to you the official music video for San Cisco's Reckless, which I worked on last year as Costume Lady. This was a total joy to work on, with lovely people and lovely clothes (massive cheers to my pal Michael for letting me raid his wardrobe). Watch away!

directed by Melissa Smith and Aimee-Leah Gellard / produced by Liam Murray / cinematography by Kristoffer Myhre / edited by Sabrina Reil / featuring Steve Madsen, Shannen Chin-Quan and Henry Hammersla

national anthem

I like Lana Del Rey a lot but I'm no diehard fan of her music - I find her songs generally pretty hit or miss. But this - this for me is LDR at her best. I love the way she absolutely kills those retro vibes, while coating them in a thick layer of sadness and nostalgia. Gurl knows what she's doing. And how to look damn good while doing it, of course.

love is strange

vintage dress / vintage jumper / ASOS socks

A few of my current sartorial interests as demonstrated through the above outfit: pale pink, ratty but cosy old jumpers, grunge-y but sweet little dresses, piling on the floral. Not pictured, but accessorised with, many a cup of tea, numerous small notebooks filled with to do lists and this song:

american graffiti

I tweeted the other week that my initial reaction to watching American Graffiti was anger. It is a right damn shame that I hadn't seen it sooner. IT IS SO GOOD, YOU GUYS. If I'm preaching to the already converted here, I don't care, I'MMA PREACH AWAY.

Get ready for some no-enthusiasm-held-back "reviewing":

THE MUSIC. I don't know what else to say except that it is an example of a perfect movie soundtrack. I actually fell in love with the film before I'd even seen it because someone recommended the soundtrack and it. Is. Perfect. It is perfect. See examples below and then I dare you to not go buy/ download the whole damn thing. THE CARS. This movie is a visual explosion of hot rod goodness. I can't imagine what it must have been like to drive around the streets and be surrounded by so much style. I'm guessing it would have been amazing. THE HAIR. Give people these days more hairspray and pomade, I say! Let's all wreck our hair for the sake of volume, bounce and slickness! THE CLOTHES. THE SLANG. "I said, 'go kiss a duck, marblehead!'" "If brains were dynamite, you couldn't blow your nose." Oh, kids those days.

And you know what I especially liked? It didn't try to glamourise these kids and their lives. Amongst their fine style you can see their pimples, the way their hair's knotting from so much hairspray, the creases in their clothes, and the awkwardness! So much pure adolescent awkwardness. Like how Freaks and Geeks got early 80s high school spot on (supposedly - I wasn't there), American Graffiti gets early 60s small town teenagers what I imagine to be spot fucking on.

So. Who's going to join me in giving up modern technology for a wee while so we can instead spend the nights cruising the streets in our fab rides?

mary

My new big ass grandpa cardigan. Keeping me cosy on a chilly sunday afternoon spent drinking tea, listening to the radio and catching up on work. My sundays have been so marvelous lately. I love a good sunday.

A few photos from In The Pines, which was a pretty glorious day - great music, great setting, great atmosphere and great people.

lionheart

I figured since it's uni that's eating up my life at the moment and not giving me much time to blog, I could at least show y'all something that uni's allowed me to do. So here's the music video for Georgi Kay's 'Lionheart' that I directed last year. It's preeeeetty much my favourite thing I've ever done, and Georgi is just damn wonderful. Hooray!

swoon

Red, white and denim. Never feels wrong.

So yesterday I attended the Perth fashion blogger meet-up and it was all kinds of lovely. Photos and details to come very soon!

I can't get this song out of my head:

Just remember to fall in love. There's nothing else.

P.S. I completely forgot about this song until I stumbled across it on tumblr and now I can't stop listening to it. Seriously, how great was this movie? I need to re-watch it pronto.

history repeating

I feel like this has become my lazy summer uniform - some comfortable shorts, a plain top and a plaid shirt thrown over the top. As I found out on thursday, it's perfect for hanging out at the beach in the evening with friends.

And can I just take a moment to profess my love for this red plaid shirt? It's in amazing condition, is so comfortable and I swear it somehow goes with just about everything. And really who's surprised that it's from Twitch Vintage?

P.S. There are a couple of vintage sales on in Perth tomorrow - one at Mojo's and another at the Bakery. I'll hopefully be at the Bakery one, let me know if you'll be there too!

P.S. I honestly can't stop listening to this:

So much fun. So much bad ass.

all my friends

I feel like 80% of the past week has been cleaning. Which has been surprisingly great as I've been in an unusually clean-y fresh-start kind of mood. And my favourite part of cleaning? Finding old treasures that I'd completely forgotten about. Like all this rad jewellery that back in the 90s when my age was a single digit I couldn't keep my hands off of.

My favourites are the beaded choker and the cat ring.

ain't that good news

Last day of 2010! And it was a good 'un. I went into town, relaxed in one of my favourite spots with my notebook, came home and discovered my mum's old typewriter from the 70s and made heart-shaped chocolate cakes. Excellence.

So these shorts again. I can't stop wearing them. They're just too perfect. And yes! My hair is red now. It has been for a few weeks, but I don't think it was totally noticeable in my last outfit post. I'm a little bit in love with it.

I hope everyone has a spectacular new years, whether you're partying hard or chilling even harder.

P.S. I've had Sam Cooke on repeat for the past couple of days and it's been magical.

26 December 2010

white wine in the sun

Merry boxing day amigos! I hope y'all had yourselves excellent christmases. Or weekends. Or both! Mine was deliciously pleasant - good food, good wine, good company, good air conditioning - that's all you need, really.

Today was equally relaxing - sitting back with my newly acquired Community dvd (after watching the Doctor Who christmas special o' course), a ridiculous amount of chocolate and these boss shorts. I kind of feel like I'm channeling Sloane Peterson? A 39˚C version, anyway.

P.S. Tim Minchin sums up rather wonderfully a typical antipodean christmas...

P.P.S. Apologies for the super sporadic posting that's made up this blog over the past few months. It sucks, but I just haven't had it in me. Hopefully that can be remedied. :)

Swimming

(Two posts in a row! Wow!) Another WAY AWESOME couple of events that took place last week - Laura Marling and Florence and the Machine! What a really, really great couple of days. Laura Marling was just all lovely and quaint and folk-y and full of awkward-but-charming banter (the perfect way to spend a sunday night) and Florence was... well, Florence. Pretty much perfect in every way. Personally I preferred the more intimate setting that was Laneway back in february, but really... the woman can do no wrong. (And it was, incidentally, the perfect way to spend a tuesday night.)

If you ever get the opportunity to catch either of their shows, I highly recommend it. I hope everyone else's lives have been treating them well :)
